I finally made the jump and purchased a Kindle 3 (wi-fi version) based on all the positive reviews and the feedback from Philippe.
Kindle Notes (version 3.0.2 - latest generation)
Positive Points
- e-Ink display is really good without the old back light effect used on some older e-book readers
- Start up is fast and it keeps track of the current book state
- text2speech works well and it's understandable
- Battery last more than 4 weeks (don't forget to disable wireless when you don't need it)
- English dictionary included by default and well integrated
- Device are registered with an e-mail address where you can directly send books (simple and efficient)
- The device is light and fit one hand
- Seen as a simple USB mass-storage with a specific directory for books where you can drop any books (in MOBI,PRC,PDF,TXT,TPZ) from your favorite legal or "underground" bookstore
- I tried books from my O'Reilly bookstore in MOBI or PDF format
- The page navigation button (backward/forward) is great and you can even fast-forward by pushing the button a longer time
Negative Points
- ePub is not supported by the Amazon kindle
- PDF reading can be difficult as the "zoom" used is a bit awkward (not the same as for TXT or MOBI files)
- The only usable way is to make the Kindle as horizontal to view PDF
- Reading two-columns publication is difficult but there is a tool to convert PDF two-columns into something readable with the Kindle 3 : https://github.com/ogrisel/paper2ebook
- You need to keep an eye on your device when you are in public space like a train or a bus
- Annotation use is a bit difficult (at least in the way I'm taking notes) - papers versus e-books is back on my mind
Digital Restriction Management
- I didn't check any DRM books as I don't want to purchase DRM books
