For decades, X11 has ruled the Linux desktop. Now, a relic built for a world that no longer exists. Security was an afterthought, and the world still ran on beige terminals. But its foundations are crumbling, struggling to keep pace with modern security, performance and graphical demands. Fragmented, vulnerable, and patched beyond recognition, X11 limps forward while the systems around it evolve. Wayland is the future, not by choice, but by inevitability. The transition is accelerating, and soon enough, X11 will be little more than a relic of the past. Some will resist, others will adapt. When the last X server finally shuts down, where will you stand?

@fraggle UUCP is still in use in various places. Even over SSH. So X11 might be a persistent technology in some edge cases.
